about

"Lasting Look" is the first recording I made since rediscovering the cassette recorder in the Fall of 2010. On October 15 I was browsing through my lyrics looking for unrecorded material to track on Carson's new purchase, a Tascam Portastudio 488, which because of a track malfunction could only record two tracks at a time. I set up an AEA stereo ribbon microphone in front of me, capturing a left/right image (in subsequent recordings I turned to mic horizontally to separate the guitar and vocal) and performed very close to the mic, yielding a very warm bass response which sounded magical in the headphones. I found a song I didn't remember the melody to and started singing it to new chords which happened to sound appropriate in the warmth of the phones.
The cassette that came in the recorder would only record 2.5 minutes, so I took only my favorite parts of the lyrics and whipped it into a very short three-verse song. The original set of lyrics was titled "Hostess" and these notes were with them: ["guitar written at Shackleford's house in Searcy words written at Fripp Island thinking about Florida, strangely"].

The phrase "through slanted silver rain" came from my grandmother, Mescal Medders.

lyrics

O Gracious hostess
Kind, accommodating
Here on your pillow
Sun through the window
I feel like a brand new man

Oh trees feel the ocean
Shade creaking rockers
Whispering through
Strands of Spanish moss
I feel like a brand new man

Oh mermaid eyes
With her nose in a book
Took one lasting look at me leave
Through slanted silver rain
